Greenwich has five airports within reach and no easy way to any of them except one. Westchester County Airport is fifteen minutes away. Everything else involves I-95, a bridge, and a traffic pattern that can turn a forty-minute drive into ninety.

Residents and the assistants who book their travel learn this quickly. The flight is the fixed point. The drive is the variable. The job of an airport car service is to take that variable away.

This guide covers each airport from Greenwich and the neighboring towns of Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, and Old Greenwich: realistic drive times, the routes professionals use, how early to leave, which vehicle to book, and how to set up the reservation so it runs without attention. Stealth Protection is based in Port Chester, one town over from the Greenwich line, and these are routes we drive every day. Service details are on our airport car service page.

Drive Times From Central Greenwich

These are typical ranges for a professional driver who knows the alternates. Weather, construction, and events can push them higher.

From Stamford add five to ten minutes. From Darien and New Canaan add fifteen to twenty. From Westport add thirty.

Peak means roughly 6:30 to 9:30 AM toward the city and 3:30 to 7:00 PM in both directions, with Friday afternoons in summer in a category of their own.

Westchester County Airport (HPN)

The home airport for Greenwich. King Street or I-684 to Airport Road, and the terminal is in sight.

HPN serves a limited set of commercial routes and a very large volume of private aviation. For private flights, the booking must name the FBO, since each has its own entrance, and should include the tail number so the aircraft can be tracked. Planeside pickup is arranged with the FBO in advance where it is permitted.

Because the drive is short, the risk at HPN is complacency. Early morning commercial departures leave in a tight bank, and the security line can be longer than the building suggests. We cover HPN in depth, including FBO procedures and common booking mistakes, in our Westchester County Airport car service guide.

When to leave Greenwich: 75 minutes before a commercial departure. For private departures, time the arrival to the operator's instruction, usually fifteen to twenty minutes before wheels up.

LaGuardia (LGA)

The closest major airport and the default for domestic travel.

Routes. I-95 to the Hutchinson River Parkway to the Whitestone Bridge and the Whitestone Expressway to the Grand Central Parkway. The alternate is I-95 to the Throgs Neck Bridge and the Cross Island to the Grand Central. A driver chooses between the bridges in real time. The Bruckner interchange and the approach to the Whitestone are the usual trouble spots.

What to know. LaGuardia's rebuilt terminals are a major improvement, and the roadway system is now easier to navigate. Terminal B and Terminal C are separate buildings with separate approaches, so the airline and terminal should be on the reservation. Pickups use designated car service areas, and a meet and greet inside baggage claim saves the passenger from searching for the vehicle.

When to leave Greenwich: two and a half hours before a domestic departure in off-peak periods. Three hours at peak.

JFK

The international gateway, and the transfer that rewards planning most.

Routes. I-95 to the Hutchinson, the Whitestone Bridge, and the Van Wyck Expressway. The Van Wyck is among the most congested roads in the country, and ongoing construction at JFK affects terminal approaches. Alternates include the Throgs Neck Bridge to the Cross Island Parkway and the Belt Parkway. Parkways restrict commercial vans, so Sprinters stay on the expressways and are timed accordingly.

What to know. JFK's terminals are spread around a loop, and terminal assignments have been shifting during redevelopment. Confirm the terminal the day before. For international arrivals, customs and baggage typically add forty-five to ninety minutes after landing. A chauffeur tracking the flight adjusts to the actual arrival, and meet and greet places the chauffeur at the customs exit with the passenger's name.

When to leave Greenwich: four hours before an international departure at peak. Three and a half hours off-peak.

Newark (EWR)

The longest drive, used when an airline or route requires it.

Routes. I-95 across the George Washington Bridge to the New Jersey Turnpike is the direct route. When the Cross Bronx Expressway is at a standstill, which is often, the northern alternate is I-287 across the Mario Cuomo Bridge to the Garden State Parkway or I-287 to the Turnpike. It is longer in miles and frequently shorter in minutes. This is a decision a local driver makes before leaving the driveway.

What to know. Terminal A is new and well organized. Give the driver the airline and terminal. For early morning departures the drive is fast. For late afternoon departures it is the least predictable airport run in the region.

When to leave Greenwich: four hours before an international departure, three and a half before a domestic one, more on a Friday afternoon.

Teterboro (TEB)

The region's primary private aviation airport, used for late departures and arrivals, and by many charter operators.

Routes. The same choice as Newark: the George Washington Bridge and Route 46 or Route 17, or the Mario Cuomo Bridge and the Garden State Parkway south.

What to know. Teterboro has several FBOs on different sides of the field. As at HPN, name the FBO and provide the tail number. Private flights diverted from HPN because of weather or the overnight curfew often land at Teterboro, so a return from a trip may end in New Jersey when it began in White Plains. A ground provider watching the tail number repositions without being asked.

When to leave Greenwich: time arrival to fifteen or twenty minutes before departure, and allow a generous buffer for the bridge.

How Early Should the Car Arrive?

A reliable formula:

Departure time, minus the airline's recommended check-in window, minus the peak drive time, minus a fifteen minute buffer.

Then the vehicle arrives fifteen minutes before that. A professional chauffeur is always early and waits out of the way until you are ready.

For arrivals, there is no formula to apply. Provide the flight number and the chauffeur tracks it. If the flight is forty minutes early or two hours late, the pickup adjusts.

Choosing the Vehicle

One to three passengers with normal luggage. The Cadillac Escalade ESV, our standard assignment. Extended length, quiet cabin, and room for full-size suitcases behind the third row.

A lower profile. The Chevrolet Suburban offers the same capacity with less presence.

Four or more passengers, or heavy luggage. Ski bags, golf travel cases, and a family's two weeks of luggage fill an SUV quickly. Book the nine passenger executive Sprinter or a second vehicle.

Groups. Wedding guests, corporate teams, and school groups travel together in the fifteen passenger Sprinter.

One local detail: the Merritt Parkway and the Hutchinson River Parkway are closed to commercial vans. Sprinters route by I-95 and I-287, and we account for that in the pickup time.

The complete lineup is on the fleet page.

Seasonal and Weekly Patterns to Plan Around

Traffic between Greenwich and the airports follows patterns that are predictable once you know them.

  • Monday mornings are the heaviest outbound period for business travelers. Book early departures by Friday.
  • Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons are the worst times to reach any airport south of the Bronx. If a Friday 6:00 PM flight from JFK is unavoidable, leave earlier than feels necessary.
  • Summer Fridays add beach and weekend traffic to I-95 from noon onward.
  • Sunday evenings bring a wave of returning flights and slow approaches to LaGuardia and JFK.
  • The week of Thanksgiving, the second half of December, and school vacation weeks fill vehicles and roads alike. Reserve as soon as flights are booked.
  • September in New York includes the United Nations General Assembly, which closes streets on the East Side and slows the FDR Drive and the approaches to the bridges.
  • Winter storms affect HPN first and hardest. A flight moved from HPN to LaGuardia or JFK changes the drive from fifteen minutes to an hour or more. Tell us as soon as the airline tells you.

What Happens on the Day

A well-run transfer follows the same sequence every time.

The evening before. You receive the chauffeur's name, mobile number, and vehicle description. The chauffeur reviews the flight, the route, and any notes on your profile.

Thirty minutes before pickup. The chauffeur checks traffic and chooses the route. The vehicle is clean, fueled, and set to your preferred temperature.

Fifteen minutes before pickup. The vehicle is outside your home, positioned out of the way. You receive a message that the chauffeur has arrived. There is no horn and no doorbell unless you have asked for one.

Pickup. Luggage is loaded for you. The route has already been chosen.

En route. A quiet, smooth ride. If conditions change, the chauffeur reroutes without discussion unless you would like to be consulted.

Arrival. Curbside at the correct terminal door for your airline, or at the FBO entrance. Luggage is unloaded and placed on a cart if needed.

Your return. The flight is tracked from departure. The chauffeur is in position before you land, inside the terminal if you have booked meet and greet. You walk to a vehicle that is already waiting.

Why Residents Choose a Car Service Over Driving or Rideshare

Driving yourself means leaving a vehicle in long-term parking, a shuttle or a long walk with bags, and the drive home after an overnight flight.

Rideshare works for a spontaneous trip across town. For a 4:45 AM pickup in backcountry Greenwich it is a gamble. Driver availability is thin at that hour, cancellations are common, vehicle size and condition are unknown, and there is no one to call when it goes wrong.

A professional car service means a confirmed reservation, a named chauffeur, a known vehicle, flight tracking, and a dispatcher who answers the phone. For corporate travelers it also means consolidated billing through a corporate transportation account.

For Executive Assistants and Travel Managers

If you book airport transfers for others, these practices prevent most problems.

  • Book the round trip at once. The return is the leg that gets forgotten.
  • Include the flight number or tail number on every reservation.
  • Include the passenger's mobile number, as well as your own.
  • State the terminal or FBO.
  • Count the bags, including oversized items.
  • Note preferences once. Quiet ride, temperature, a specific water, a preferred route. We keep a profile so you do not have to repeat it.
  • Ask for the chauffeur's details the evening before. We send name, mobile, and vehicle.
  • Tell us about VIP sensitivities. If the traveler should not be met with a name sign, we use a company name, a code, or direct contact by phone.

Our guide to corporate car service for executives and assistants covers account setup and billing in more detail.

When a Transfer Should Include a Protective Agent

Most airport runs need a good chauffeur and nothing more. Some call for an additional level of care.

  • A public figure arriving on a commercial flight, where recognition in the terminal is likely.
  • An executive traveling during a period of corporate controversy.
  • A traveler carrying jewelry, art, or sensitive materials.
  • Children or a spouse traveling without the principal.
  • A visiting executive whose corporate policy requires protective ground transport.

Stealth Protection holds both the transportation license and the executive protection license. A licensed protective agent can be added to any transfer, working with the chauffeur as one team under one company. The agent meets the traveler inside the terminal or at the aircraft, manages the walk to the vehicle, and rides along. There is no second vendor to coordinate. The service is described on our secure transportation and executive protection pages.

Households that travel often may find a dedicated arrangement more practical than booking trip by trip. Our guide to private family security drivers explains how that works.

Beyond the Airport

An airport run is often one part of a longer day. A client landing at LaGuardia with meetings in Stamford, lunch in Greenwich, and a dinner in Manhattan is better served by an hourly chauffeur booking than by four separate transfers. Guests arriving for a wedding or a corporate retreat can be coordinated as a group through our event transportation service.
