There are two ways to book a chauffeured vehicle. Point to point takes you from one address to another. Hourly service, which the industry calls as-directed, gives you a vehicle and a chauffeur for a block of time, to use however the day requires.
Most people default to point to point because it looks cheaper. For a single airport run it is. For a day with four stops, an evening with an uncertain end, or any schedule that might change, hourly service is usually the better choice, and often the less expensive one once waiting time and minimums on multiple transfers are counted.
This guide explains how as-directed service works, when it beats point to point, how billing is structured, how to plan an hourly booking well, and how clients across Westchester, Fairfield County, and New York City use it. Full service details are on our hourly chauffeur page.
How As-Directed Service Works
You reserve a vehicle for a start time and an estimated number of hours. The chauffeur arrives early, and from the moment the booking begins, the vehicle is yours.
- The chauffeur stays with you all day. Same person, same vehicle, first stop to last.
- The vehicle waits at every stop, as close as traffic rules allow, and returns to the door when you call or at the time you set.
- Your belongings stay in the vehicle. Luggage, presentation materials, shopping, coats, and a change of clothes. The vehicle is attended, so they are secure.
- The itinerary can change. Add a stop, skip one, extend a meeting, go somewhere else entirely.
- The day ends when you are finished. If you need more time than you reserved, the booking extends, subject to the chauffeur's next commitment, which we plan around.
When Hourly Beats Point to Point
Multiple stops
Three meetings in Stamford, White Plains, and Midtown are three separate transfers on a point to point basis, each with its own minimum, its own pickup timing, and its own risk of a gap. One hourly booking covers all three, with no waiting at a curb and no re-explaining who you are.
Uncertain end times
Dinners, negotiations, court appearances, medical appointments, and weddings do not end on schedule. With a point to point return you either guess and pay waiting time, or call for a car when you finish and wait for it. With hourly service the vehicle is already outside.
Things to carry
A day with luggage, samples, garment bags, or gifts is far easier when the vehicle is a secure base.
City days
Parking in Manhattan is expensive, slow, and sometimes impossible. Rideshare pickups on busy avenues are unpredictable. A chauffeur who circles and meets you at the door removes the problem.
Guests who matter
A client, an investor, a candidate, or a visiting relative. A dedicated vehicle for the day says something a series of rides does not.
When you need to work
Point to point trips are short and fragmented. A full day with one chauffeur turns all the time between stops into quiet, continuous working time.
When Point to Point Is the Right Call
We say this plainly because it builds trust: many trips should be booked point to point.
- A single airport transfer with no stops. See our airport car service.
- A one-way trip to a destination where you will stay for many hours or overnight.
- A commute with a fixed return time many hours later. Two transfers cost less than eight idle hours.
A simple test: if the vehicle would sit unused for more than three or four hours, two transfers are probably better. If the gaps are shorter or uncertain, hourly wins.
How Hourly Billing Works
Hourly service is straightforward, and the terms should be clear before you confirm.
- An hourly rate by vehicle class. An SUV prices differently from a Sprinter.
- A minimum number of hours. Standard across the industry, because a vehicle reserved for you cannot be booked elsewhere around that window.
- Billing from the start of service to the end. Ask whether travel time to and from the provider's base applies for distant pickups.
- Time beyond the reservation is billed in increments at the same rate.
- Tolls, parking, and gratuity are itemized. Gratuity can be handled through the customer portal.
You will see the full price before you confirm. Request a quote or reserve online at any time.
Nine Ways Clients Use Hourly Service
1. The executive meeting day. A morning in Greenwich, lunch in White Plains, two meetings in Midtown, and home. Calls are made from the back seat. Materials stay in the car. Corporate clients book these through our corporate transportation accounts.
2. The roadshow. Six investor meetings in one day across Manhattan with no margin. The chauffeur knows each building's entrance, stages within sight, and has the vehicle at the door the moment a meeting ends.
3. The night out. Dinner and theater, a concert at the Garden, a game at the stadium, or an anniversary in the city. No parking, no designated driver, no standing on a corner at midnight. For a special occasion, ask about exotic vehicles.
4. The shopping day. Greenwich Avenue, The Westchester, Madison Avenue, or SoHo. Purchases go in the vehicle and the day continues.
5. The real estate tour. A relocating family or an investor seeing eight properties across three towns. The chauffeur manages the route and the timing while the client and the broker talk.
6. Medical appointments. Procedures and treatments in Manhattan or at the regional medical centers, where the patient should not drive and the end time is unknown. A patient, steady chauffeur makes a hard day easier.
7. The visiting guest. A parent, a client, or a friend in town for a few days. A vehicle at their disposal is a generous and practical gesture.
8. Prom, graduations, and milestones. Parents want a safe, accountable professional at the wheel. An hourly booking keeps the group together from photos to the last drop-off. Larger groups travel in a Sprinter.
9. Wine country and day trips. The Hudson Valley, the North Fork, Litchfield County. A day built around not driving.
A Worked Comparison
Consider a common day for a Westchester executive.
- 8:00 AM: home in Rye to a breakfast meeting in Greenwich
- 10:30 AM: Greenwich to the office in White Plains
- 1:00 PM: White Plains to a lunch in Midtown
- 3:30 PM: Midtown to a meeting downtown
- 5:30 PM: downtown back to Rye
Booked point to point, that is five separate reservations. Each carries its own base charge. Each requires the executive or the assistant to predict an end time. If the lunch runs forty minutes over, the 3:30 car is either waiting on the clock or has been released, and the assistant is on the phone. At each stop, the executive's bag and coat go inside with them.
Booked hourly, it is one reservation of roughly ten hours. One chauffeur who learns within the first hour how the executive likes things. No predicted end times. The bag stays in the car. When lunch runs over, nothing happens, because the vehicle is already outside.
In most cases like this the hourly total is comparable to the five transfers once waiting time is included, and the day is dramatically easier. When we think point to point would serve you better, we will say so.
What to Expect From the Chauffeur
Hourly service puts you in a vehicle with one person for many hours. The quality of that person matters more than the vehicle.
- Early. Fifteen minutes ahead of the start time, waiting quietly.
- Prepared. The itinerary reviewed, routes planned, entrances identified, parking options known.
- Presentable. Dark suit, clean vehicle, and the cabin set to your preferences.
- Discreet. Conversations and phone calls in the vehicle are private. Our chauffeurs do not repeat what they hear.
- Attentive without hovering. Doors opened, bags handled, an umbrella ready. Conversation if you would like it and quiet if you would not.
- Smooth. Gentle acceleration and braking, so you can read, type, or rest.
- Resourceful. A closed road, a moved meeting, a forgotten item at the last stop. A good chauffeur solves these without drama.
- Reachable. A direct mobile number, and a dispatcher behind the chauffeur at all hours.
- Patient. Waiting is the job. You will never be made to feel rushed.
Seasonal Notes for Our Area
- September through mid-November is the busiest corporate season in New York. United Nations week in late September closes streets across the East Side and slows every crosstown trip. Hourly service is particularly valuable then, because a waiting vehicle is worth more than a requested one.
- December brings holiday parties, shopping days, and heavy evening traffic into Manhattan. Book evenings early.
- Spring is gala, prom, and graduation season. Weekend availability tightens from late April through June.
- Summer shifts demand to leisure: concerts, ball games, the US Open in late August, and day trips to the North Fork and the Hudson Valley.
- Winter storms are when a professional chauffeur in a capable vehicle matters most. We operate in all conditions that are safe to drive in.
Planning an Hourly Booking Well
- Send the itinerary, even if it is rough. Addresses and approximate times let the chauffeur plan routes, parking, and entrances in advance.
- Flag the fixed points. Tell us which times cannot move, such as a flight or a curtain.
- Estimate generously. A booking that runs over can conflict with the chauffeur's next assignment. One that ends early is simple.
- Say how you want to be contacted. Many clients text the chauffeur five minutes before they are ready.
- Mention the door. In Manhattan, the right entrance can save ten minutes.
- Note preferences once. Temperature, music or silence, water, newspapers, a phone charger type. We keep them on your profile.
- Count passengers and bags. Choose the vehicle to fit the fullest moment of the day.
Choosing the Vehicle
Cadillac Escalade ESV. Our standard assignment and the right choice for most hourly bookings. Quiet, spacious, and at home at any curb. See the Escalade ESV.
Chevrolet Suburban. The same room with a lower profile. See the Suburban.
Nine passenger executive Sprinter. A team traveling together, a family outing, or a day where conversation on the move matters. See the nine passenger Sprinter.
Fifteen passenger Sprinter. Groups, celebrations, and event shuttles. See the fifteen passenger Sprinter.
Sprinters cannot use the Merritt, Hutchinson River, or Saw Mill parkways, so we plan their routes on interstates. The full lineup is on the fleet page.
Hourly Service With a Protective Agent
Some days call for more than a chauffeur. A publicized appearance. A day in court. A period of unwanted attention. A client carrying valuables between a vault, a jeweler, and home.
Stealth Protection holds both the transportation license and the executive protection license. A licensed protective agent can be added to any hourly booking. The agent accompanies you at each stop. The security driver stays with the vehicle, which means it is always attended and always ready. Both come from one company under one standard, with one point of contact. No second vendor and no handoffs.
We explain the roles in Security Driver vs. Chauffeur and the services on our secure transportation and executive protection pages.
From Hourly Bookings to a Dedicated Driver
Many long-term client relationships begin with a few hourly bookings. An executive books a meeting day. It goes well. The assistant books the next one and asks for the same chauffeur. Within a few months the household or company is using the service several days a week.
At that point a dedicated arrangement usually makes more sense: the same driver on set days, a named backup, preferences already known, and consolidated monthly billing. For families we describe this in our guide to private family drivers. For principals who need daily protective coverage, see Full-Time Executive Protection: Hiring In-House vs. Retaining a Licensed Firm.
Hourly service is the simplest way to evaluate a provider before making that commitment. You see the vehicles, meet the people, and test the standard on a real day.
For Executive Assistants
Hourly bookings make your day easier as well as your principal's.
- One reservation in place of four or five.
- One chauffeur to contact when the schedule shifts.
- No gaps when a meeting runs long.
- A direct line to the chauffeur and to our dispatcher at all hours.
- Written confirmation the evening before, with name, mobile number, and vehicle.
- One invoice with the day itemized.
Our guide to corporate car service for executives and assistants covers account setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum number of hours?Yes. The minimum depends on the vehicle and the day and is shown in your quote before you confirm.

What if I finish early? The booking ends when you are done, subject to the minimum.
Can I leave things in the vehicle?Yes. The vehicle stays attended.
